Ayurvedic Diet and Lifestyle Changes to Cure Infertility

Dr. Amritha Mohan B.A.M.S

Infertility is a medical condition characterised by the inability to conceive or achieve a pregnancy after a year of regular unprotected sexual intercourse. Both men and women can experience infertility, and it can be caused by a variety of factors.Ayurveda views infertility as a complex issue that various factors, including imbalance in the doshas, poor digestion, and accumulation of toxins can influence.

Ayurvedic Dietary Guidelines

Ayurveda explains that infertility can be caused by a variety of leading factors such as:

  • Inadequate nutrition, poor digestion or a toxic build-up in the body causing specific ailments.
  • Low sperm count due to overeating spicy, salty and hot food.
  • Infections or injuries to the reproductive organs.
  • Overindulgence in sexual activity.
  • Overly excessive control of sexual urges for extended periods.
  • Genetics or hereditary predispositions.

Busy, career-driven women living and working in cities are increasingly experiencing a number of these factors, exacerbated by heavy stress, an over-stimulated adrenal system, exposure to environmental pollutants, and a diet which lacks the nourishment needed to facilitate fertility. Their symptoms can be worsened by time spent in masculine work settings, disconnected from divine feminine energies.Male infertility can be caused by various conditions that impair sperm production or ejaculation, hormonal imbalance, tubular defects, and testicular cancer. According to Ayurvedic teachings, all of these conditions can be caused by a Dosha imbalance of Vata, Pitta or Kapha.

Foods to include

Some general dietary guidelines that may be considered for Ayurvedic infertility management:

  • Whole Grains:Include whole grains like brown rice, quinoa, and oats. These provide complex carbohydrates and fiber, promoting overall health.
  • Healthy Fats:Consume healthy fats from sources such as ghee (clarified butter), olive oil, coconut oil, and avocados. Healthy fats are essential for hormone production.
  • Protein:Opt for high-quality protein sources like lentils, beans, nuts, seeds, and lean meats. Protein is crucial for tissue repair and hormone synthesis.
  • Green Vegetables: Include fresh and green vegetables in your diet. Focus on vegetables that are in season.
  • Fruits:Choose fresh, seasonal fruits. Ayurveda suggests that sweet, juicy fruits are beneficial for fertility. Examples include mangoes, oranges, and berries.
  • Dairy:Organic, grass-fed dairy products like milk, ghee, and yogurt can be included in moderation. These provide essential nutrients and support reproductive health.
  • Spices:Incorporate fertility-promoting spices like turmeric, cumin, coriander, and fennel in your cooking. These spices are believed to have balancing effects on the body.
  • Nuts and Seeds:Almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds, and pumpkin seeds are rich in essential nutrients, including omega-3 fatty acids and zinc.
  • Hydration:Stay well-hydrated with room temperature or warm water. Avoid excessive consumption of cold drinks and ice-cold water.

Food to avoid

  • Avoid processed carbohydrates, excess starch, antibiotic and hormone laden meat, milk and canned products.

  • Avoid foods high in trans-fats such as cakes, cookies and fried fast foods. These block arteries, threaten fertility and harm the heart and blood vessels.
  • Avoid foods containing preservatives and other chemicals like artificial sweeteners. These include soft drinks, chewing gum, jellies, baked goods, candy, fruit juice, and ice cream.
  • Avoid Mono Sodium Glutamate (MSG) .
  • Avoid potato chips, frozen dinners, cold cuts, gravies, ranch dressing, salty snacks, artificial flavorings and colorings.
  • Excess alcohol, caffeine, tobacco, soda, smoking, red meat, refined carbohydrates such as pasta, white bread and rice, increase and exacerbate female infertility.
