2)Sub acute Sinusitis – which runs from 4 to 8 weeks
3)Chronic Sinusitis – which persists longer than 8 weeks
Locations of sinus cavity and associated symptoms:
1)Maxillary sinus – pain or pressure in maxillary areas (tooth, cheek, headache, etc.)
2)Frontal Sinus – pain or pressure in the frontal sinus areas (above eyes, frontal headache)
3)Ethmoid Sinus – pain or pressure between/ behind eyes
4)Sphenoid sinus – pain or pressure behind the eyes, but often refers to the vertex .
What Causes Sinusitis According To Ayurveda?
According to Ayurveda, the main site of kapha dosha is the head, and the nose is the gateway to the head. Hence, similar symptoms of sinusitis are mentioned under Nasa roga (disease of the nose) and Shiro roga (disease of head). It can be correlated as Kaphaja siroroga and Suryaavartha under Siroroga and also as Dushtapratishyaya in Nasa roga.

o Atibhojana (excessive intake of food)
o Guru bhojana (excessive intake of food taking a long time to digest)
o Ati snigda bhojana (excessive intake of oily food)
o Atyambupaana/sheethambupaana (excessive drinking of cold water)

Sinusitis Ayurvedic Treatment
The principle line of treatment is ama pachana (to break down toxins) by giving medicines with deepana pachana (digestive) to increase Agni (digestive fire). Then, to clear the obstruction of the srothas (channels), teekshana Shodana (substantial expulsion of aggravated) to the nearest route, i.e. nose by Nasya (one of the panchakarma) is given. Further, to enhance the immunity of the individual, Rasayana is advised. In all types of siroroga and nasaroga, nasya is the prime treatment to remove the aggravated doshas. If the patient has more bala (strength) and aggravated doshas, Vamana is also recommended.
There are two modalities of treatment
- Shodana (Purificatory treatment)
a)Deepanapachana (to increase Agni)
- Shamana (Palliative treatment)
a)ayurvedic medicines and Herbal Formulations
The treatment mainly includes Deepana pachana, Snehana, Swedana, Vamana, Virechana, Dhoomapana, and Nasya.
The importance of Deepana-Pachana drugs is to bring the Sāma Dosha to Nirāma state. Thus, Deepana-Pachana should be administered in the beginning of the Snehana therapy depending upon the conditions, when it arises. Deepana Pachana drugs are used to increase the Agni and for the digestion of Ama.
Abhyanga causes Mriduta of Doshas and according to modern science, massage to a specified area causes increased blood circulation.
Swedana causes Vilayana (liquefaction) of accumulated Doshas (mucous). Vamana Karma
Charaka defined Vamana as a process in which morbid Dosha are eliminated through upper channels i.e., mouth. Chakrapani mentions Urdhavabhaga as Urdhavamukha. Bhavaprakasha also has same opinion for Urdhva as Mukhamarga. Vamana is a process in which Apakva Pitta and Kapha are removed forcefully through upper channels.
Virechana (therapeutic purgation) is a common procedure that is widely practiced among the Panchakarma treatments (pentad treatments). Virechana increase the secretion by irritating the mucous membrane of the GIT. Second, it prevents absorption of nutrients, and finally, it increases gastrointestinal motility.
Dhumapana works on Vata and Kapha Dosha. Due to Sukshma Guna of drugs used for Dhumapana; it opens/enters the smallest channels, with Ushna and Tikshna Guna it liquefies and eliminates the Dosha from their nearer routes. However gaseous form of medicine increases the bio availability of it. The gases are absorbed in blood by pressure difference and greater surface area in lung. By using the particular process of Dhumapana i.e., uses three puffs of smoke without exhalation, one can achieve its absorption at maximum level.
